Vermont professional engineers are required to complete 30 professional development hours (PDHs) as part of the state’s continuing professional competency requirement before license renewal. Vermont PE licenses renew on a biennial cycle and expire on July 31 of even-numbered years. The requirement applies to every licensee except those renewing for the first time. A PDH is defined as one contact hour, or 60 minutes, of instruction or presentation, and PDHs must be earned during the three years preceding the renewal date. Qualifying courses and activities should be aimed at maintaining, improving, or expanding the engineer’s knowledge and skill relevant to the licensee’s field and methods of engineering practice. Acceptable subject areas include technical topics directly related to engineering practice, awareness of professional practice ethical concerns and conflicts, standards of practice or care, and engineering management. Vermont allows PDHs to be earned through continuing education courses, seminars, presentations, workshops, college courses, teaching or presenting, published professional work, code or standards development, and qualifying activities delivered in person, through the internet, by correspondence, by television, or by pre-recorded media. Vermont does not pre-approve courses or providers, so licensees are responsible for selecting appropriate continuing education and keeping documentation, including a PDH log, attendance verification or certificates, and course outlines or other evidence of course content. Records should be maintained for the prior two biennial renewal periods in case of audit.
