New Mexico professional engineers are required to complete 30 professional development hours (PDH) during each two-year reporting period as a condition of license renewal. At least 2 PDH must be in ethics/business-related training. Qualifying PDH activities must have a clear purpose and objective and should maintain, improve, or expand the engineer’s skills and knowledge relevant to the practice of engineering. Acceptable activities may include technical, ethical, or managerial content and may be sponsored by employers, government agencies, professional or technical societies, colleges or universities, or other organizations. New Mexico does not pre-approve courses for PDH credit, so each licensee is responsible for selecting appropriate continuing education and maintaining documentation in case of audit. The Board retains final authority over whether an activity qualifies and the PDH value awarded. Licensees should keep certificates or other proof of attendance showing the licensee’s name, program name, dates attended, contact hours or CEUs, and sponsor signature. Up to 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next biennium, but ethics hours do not carry over as ethics credit. New Mexico’s renewal deadline is December 31, with odd-numbered licenses renewing in odd-numbered years and even-numbered licenses renewing in even-numbered years.
Separate 1-hour engineering ethics courses are also available
New Mexico professional engineers need at least 2 hours in ethics related to professional engineering each 2-year renewal period. For New Mexico license renewal, we recommend the 2-hour ethics bundle. Individual 1-hour ethics courses may be useful for supplemental credit or for engineers who need only one additional ethics hour.
