Louisiana professional engineers are required to complete 15 professional development hours (PDH) per calendar year in engineering-related acceptable activities. At least 1 PDH each calendar year must be in professional ethics, which Louisiana describes as the standard of professional conduct and responsibility required of a professional engineer. For professional engineers who design buildings and/or building systems in Louisiana, at least 4 PDH per calendar year must be earned in Life Safety Code, building codes, and/or Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines. Qualifying activities should be technical in nature or address business management practices, professional ethics, quality assurance, codes, or similar topics that facilitate professional development, safeguard life, health, and property, and promote the public welfare. Louisiana recognizes activities such as college courses, correspondence courses, continuing education courses, seminars, tutorials, short courses, in-house courses, workshops, professional or technical presentations, teaching, professional society participation, published professional work, patents, NCEES or state exam problem preparation, thesis direction, and certain technical committee service. Louisiana uses a board-approved sponsor/provider framework; courses from board-approved sponsors/providers qualify as acceptable activities, while courses from unapproved sponsors/providers may still qualify if they meet the Board’s acceptable-activity standard. Each licensee is responsible for selecting appropriate continuing education, maintaining a professional development activity log, and keeping certificates, transcripts, or other proof of attendance showing the course title or description, sponsor/provider, licensee name, date, and PDH earned. Records must be maintained for at least six consecutive calendar years and provided to the Board upon request or audit. Up to 7 excess PDH may be carried forward into the next calendar year, and no more than 8 PDH may be earned in a single calendar day.
