New Jersey professional engineers are required to complete 24 continuing professional competency (CPC) credits during each biennial renewal period. At least 2 CPC credits, but no more than 8 CPC credits, must be in professional practice ethics. Qualifying continuing education must directly and materially relate to the practice of professional engineering and have the clear purpose of maintaining, improving, or expanding the licensee’s skills and knowledge relevant to professional engineering practice. Courses required for initial licensure and courses primarily involving practice building, practice management, or practice marketing are not approved for CPC credit. New Jersey is a Board-approved provider state, meaning CPC credit generally must be earned through educational programs or equivalent educational programs sponsored by Board-approved providers, unless the provider falls within one of the regulatory exceptions. Licensees are subject to audit and must maintain CPC records for five years after completing a course or equivalent educational program. Records should include a CPC log, sponsoring organization, attendance date, location, duration, instructor or speaker name, credits claimed, completion certificates or other attendance verification, and supporting course materials such as descriptions, printed program materials, and notes. Up to 12 CPC credits may be carried forward into the next biennial renewal period.

Separate 1-hour engineering ethics courses are also available

New Jersey professional engineers need at least 2 hours in ethics related to professional engineering each 2-year renewal period. For New Jersey license renewal, we recommend the 2-hour ethics bundle. Individual 1-hour ethics courses may be useful for supplemental credit or for engineers who need only one additional ethics hour.
